The consensus on presenting the news in graphics

The goal of the week was to ask three people what they thought of my project idea.

Interview 1:
I presented the idea first and foremost to Steve. Steve is an electrical engineer major at my school. He loves reading textbooks and informational brochures, he loves to look at maps, and anything with pictures and diagrams.

This is the sort of diagram that Steve looks at on a daily basis. Courtesy photo.

Now, as a person who rarely reads novels and needs to look at diagrams and pictures to accompany any text, Steve does not read full length news articles. There's no time for watching the news in a dorm room, and Steve is always out and about.

When I told him my project idea was to present the news in a graphic form, with words and pictures, he said he would "actually read the news!" Later on, he sent me a text:

Steve is also my boyfriend, so the hearts and smileys are appropriate in this context.
Interview 2:
As for what others think of my idea, I called my grandmother next. Now, keep in mind that my grandmother is a serious news reader. She reads the thick Sunday newspaper almost cover to cover every week. She watches the news, reads the news, saves the news, cuts the news out of the paper and mails me clippings, emails me about news, and falls asleep to news.

When I told her my idea, her reaction was different than I expected.

"I think that would be good," Grammy said. "I am always drawn to the comics, especially the comics that have politics in them."

She proceeded to give me examples of comics, one of which is in Canada and does a lot with political comics.

"I know for me, something like that I would like very much," Grammy said.  "I like, sometimes, the humor added. I should think that could work -- not for everybody probably. I think it could be hard to sell."

Well, at least she has an honest opinion.

Interview 3:
The next person I thought I would try to interview is my mom. She works for the government doing systems analysis. In a way, she's kind of a rocket scientist. Her morning routine consists of watching the news on loop. She doesn't retain all the stories, but we've had lengthy discussions in the early morning hours about what's going on in the world.

"I like it," Mom said. "I think you can be a little creative with the graphics, too. Yeah I would assume it would depend on the mood of the article, what you would want."

She asked me what kind of graphics I would have, if it would be all hand-drawn or if I could use other mediums. I should also mention that my mother is an artist, and a brilliant one at that. She loves painting and drawing. She's had her pieces hung in local restaurants.

"Sounds like fun," Mom said.
