My best friend's mom has started several personal businesses. She was reluctant to interview because none of her businesses have lasted very long (she's a stay at home mom with four children). I've seen her in action, though, and the woman knows what it takes to get a business going.
I emailed her, called her twice, and emailed her again. After a busy weekend, she was able to email me back (the phone was dead).
So, rather than try to sum up her story, I will transcribe her email below because her explanation is impeccable.
Michele's Culinary Creations -
The challenge for me with starting a very small business (one person) is that you have to wear so many different hats. Me, myself and I had to write the business plan, register the business with the state, design the website and implement a marketing plan. I also handled all the bookkeeping, banking, billing, and sales calls. With a personal chef business I had to create customized recipes for each client, shop for the ingredients, prepare and then package the food. Although I love to cook and I liked the idea of running my own business, I found the amount of hours necessary to effectively run the business was not worth the income it brought in.
I ran this business for about 1 year. Would I start another business? Yes, given the opportunity I think I would. I like small business. When a new small business opens in town, I am quietly rooting for them. I think I have that "entrepreneur spirit" that people talk about. So I would say at some point I will try again. (not a personal chef business!!!!) You learn from your mistakes (hopefully) so maybe next time it will work out a little better. :)
